Motivations and Difficulties in Chile's Entry Into United Nations
Abstract
This article analyzes the political work of Chile during its entry into United Nations. This process, which began with the San Francisco Conference and culminated with the approval of the United Nations Charter in the National Congress, was constituted by both internal and external pressures. The first case is evidenced in the parliamentary appointment of the Chilean delegation based on a proportional representation of the political parties based on the electoral results of March 1945; while the second, is observed in the pressures sustained by the great powers that influenced the course of the San Francisco Conference and that transcended the discussion of the Charter of United Nations, having repercussions in both legislative chambers. The research is based on specialized literature and archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile, the Library of National Congress and official documents of the United States.
