The challenges of rural women to access research in Northern Cauca

Keywords: rural women, research, challenges, trajectories

Abstract

This article analyzes the challenges rural women face in their participation in research processes, based on a training experience in community research developed with 24 women, mostly from northern Cauca, Colombia. For many of them, research is a challenge: approaching strictly academic research can be complex; however, some have managed to overcome it thanks to their studies, generating positive impacts in their communities by addressing emerging issues. This process has also allowed them to recognize and strengthen their own capacities and achievements in the research field. Conversations with the group revealed inequalities in access to research, which directly impacts education and community development. From this, the need arose to make visible the challenges rural women face in accessing research, as well as to identify possible responses and support that government entities can provide. It is also highlighted that community research conducted by indigenous, Afro-descendant, and peasant rural women transcends the academic sphere, focusing primarily on addressing social and structural problems present in their territories.
