Social representations of feminism among non-activist women in contemporary Chile: tensions between moderation and transgression
Abstract
This study analyzes the social representations surrounding feminism among non-feminist activist women in various regions of Chile through 42 semi-structured interviews. The data was analyzed using Thematic Analysis, and five themes were identified: feminism as formal equality, theorization, a recent phenomenon, opposition between moderate and extreme feminism, and feminism as transgression. These findings highlight how the social representation of feminism is constructed through the juxtaposition of two main images of feminism: a moderate one, supported by most interviewees, anchored in the characteristics of institutional feminism predominant in the 1990s; and another one, perceived by some as extreme and by others as transgressive, expressed through the embodiment and action repertoires of the Feminist Student Movement (2018). Both images share a figurative core based on the idea of formal equality between men and women as the central objective of feminism. In summary, the predominance of pro-equality, neoliberal, and conservative discourses and images in the social representation operates as an ideological regulation mechanism that limits the political potential of feminist discourse and action in the contemporary Chilean context.
