Management model and institutional innovation as determinants of university performance: the case of Universidad Bernardo O’Higgins (2008–2026)
Abstract
This article aims to analyze the articulation between the university management model and institutional innovation as an explanatory factor of university performance in a peripheral context, based on the case of Universidad Bernardo O’Higgins between 2008 and 2026. The study used a single-case longitudinal design supported by documentary analysis, descriptive quantitative evidence, and an interpretive classification of innovations based on the Oslo Manual. The results show that the combination of strategic governance, financial discipline, institutional innovation, and indicator-based monitoring is associated with sustained improvements in academic staff, scientific output, external funding, first-year retention, institutional accreditation, and financial sustainability. Comparative analysis also reveals relative efficiency in knowledge production and a high level of tuition-free coverage. It is concluded that the management model and institutional innovation configure a coherent system of dynamic capabilities that mediates between structural constraints and institutional outcomes.
