Memory and Cultural Heritage in Southern Chile: The Environmental Turn in the Trajectories of Women’s Organizations in the 21st Century

Keywords: environmental turn, gender, heritage, memory

Abstract

The text analyzes the environmental turn in the social sciences and humanities, an epistemological shift that integrates nature and non-humans into reflections on memory and cultural heritage. This approach challenges the historical separation between society and nature, promoting new perspectives on how memories are constructed, transmitted, and preserved in contemporary ecological and social contexts. Various concepts used to describe this cycle emphasize multispecies cohabitation within a context of environmental crisis. The environmental turn expands the notion of memory and heritage beyond the exclusively human, incorporating catastrophes, ecological devastation, and the memory of species and ecosystems. Several authors highlight the need to consider geological, biological, and multispecies temporalities. Southern Chile is presented as an illustrative case, where women lead the preservation and transmission of knowledge, memories, and biocultural heritage, articulating histories of political violence, extractivism, and natural disasters. Their agency generates practices of resistance and care that re-signify memory and heritage by linking the social and the ecological. The text concludes that the integration of academic knowledge and community experiences is key to building memories and forms of heritage capable of confronting the environmental crisis and projecting sustainable futures.
